Abstract:
A small, irregularly shaped site and other problems were overcome by imaginative solutions in Syracuse, N.Y., where a new, eight-story concrete structure was erected adjacent to and connected with an existing hospital. The project resulted form a comprehensive survey of existing health care facilities in the Syracuse area and a decision to merge two existing hospitals into one institution at a single location. The site for the new unit was a former parking lot east of one of the hospitals, so the two structures were joined at lower levels. The $16.5 million structure required 14,250 cu yd (10,896 cu m) of cast-in-place concrete as well as precast concrete units. [Author]
