Abstract:
A comprehensive waterproofing system for parking structures must deal with specific problems that lead to leakage and deterioration. Cracking, expansion jointing, surface scaling, spalling, and proper drainage must all be considered in providing adequate protection. Traditional emphasis has been on surface protection as the basis for waterproofing systems for parking structures. The theme of this article, however, is that the waterproofing consideration is a structural one, and that surface protection is secondary to crack control, expansion jointing, concrete proportioning, and placement technique. The article reviews design and field installation variables to develop a practical, economical, and comprehensive approach for waterproofing parking structures. [Author]
