Abstract:
Excessive and even smooth-curve amounts of small coarse aggregate from about l/8 to 3/8 in. (3 to 10 mm), especially when produced by crushing, have long detracted frequently from good workability and pumpability of concrete. This discussion urges that aggregate specifications limit the amounts of these sizes (severely if crushed) and recommends finish screening at the batch plant without intermediate storage to keep minimum such sizes resulting from breakage and segregation in handling and stockpiling.
