Abstract:
The figures presented in this paper graphically represent the tabular data published in ACI's Standard Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal, Heavyweight, and Mass Concrete (ACI 211.1-91). Such figures can be a useful augmentation to the mixture design tables for several reasons: (1) graphs are superior to tables in indicating the fundamental relationships between variables such as aggregate size, water content, strength, and water-cement ratio.; (2) graphs may be effective tools for teaching the process of mixture proportioning; (3) graphs more correctly imply the approximate nature of the results obtained, and (4) graphs may help ease United States professionals into the SI (metric) system of units. The paper suggests that ACI consider augmenting the current data tables with graphs.
