Abstract:
Africa’s largest concrete arch bridge is currently under construction off the southern coast of South Africa. The bridge has an overall length of 1480 ft (451 m) between abutments, an 892 ft (272 m) arch clear span, and is 709 ft (216 m) above the river below. The arch is being constructed by the suspended free cantilever method. This article discusses the site characteristics, bridge dimensions and features, analysis of alternate designs, design, and construction of the bridge.
