Abstract:
Concrete cracks because it is weak in tension and lacks ductility. Some of the major mechanisms that develop the excess tension in concrete and cause it to crack are enumerated. Proper mix proportioning, proper ingredients, and accepted procedures that have proven themselves in mixing, transportation, placing, vibrating, curing, and protection are the best defenses against cracking. In addition to these practices, the four major engineering contributions to make concrete resist cracking are reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, and expansive cement. These minimize, not eliminate, cracking. .
