Abstract:
The first part of the article describes the change during the past 30 years of the philosophy of prestressed concrete as reflected in Swiss Code SIA 162. The second part examines the development of the corresponding design rules in the successive editions of this code. While the 1956 edition stipulated full prestressing, partial prestressing was authorized in 1968. This resulted in the computation of stresses in the cracked cross section for combined bending and axial load. The 1982 revision provides unified rules for reinforced concrete with any degree of prestress.
