Abstract:
Prestressed concrete producers are presently permitted water-soluble chloride ion content of only 0.06 percent by weight of cement at 28 days. This low allowable limit makes the use of calcium chloride admixture unattractive since the small quantities permitted render no useful effect. If plant-produced prestressed concrete were permitted a water-soluble chloride content equal to that allowed in conventionally reinforced concrete, the industry could reduce curing costs by millions of dollars annuallv, The present limit appears to be based on research and not on field experience. This paper reviews the few major papers published on corrosion of reinforcement in prestressed concrete and concludes from the literature review that the present limit appears to be unwarranted. *
