Abstract:
Physical attack on concrete by crystallization of sulfate salts in pores has received little attention because it seems that the problem is often misidentified as sulfate attack. Physical damage to concrete from salt crystallization manifests itself in the form of surface scaling, similar in appearance to that of freezing and thawing damage. The mass loss from the surface is progressive, and, in poor quality concrete, the distress can lead to total disintegration.
