Abstract:
The design of reinforced columns in frameworks requires a consideration of both material and geometric nonlinearities. At service loads, the material nonlinearities arise through cracking, creep, and shrinkage, while the geometric nonlinearities are introduced through the P-6 and P-A effects. Code rules presently used are very empirical, and do not have a sound scientific basis. A very simple numerical scheme is developed herein for analyzing pin-ended eccentrically loaded columns subjected to instantaneous and long-term loading at service load levels. The results are validated against theoretical solutions and experiments, and the inaccuracies of the present code rules are illustrated. A design proposal developed else-where by the author is shown to provide a good estimate of the response of eccentrically loaded columns
