Abstract:
This paper presents some results from a comprehensive experimental program designed to determine the initiation of chloride-induced reinforcing steel corrosion in concrete under natural salt spray and simultaneous service loads. Factors deemed to contribute to the initiation of steel corrosion under service conditions are examined, including concrete cover, crack width, and loading conditions that have not been investigated thus far, as shown in the literature. The focus of this paper is to analyze the test results and quantify the effect of different loading conditions on corrosion activity and initiation. The effect of different sizes of test specimens on the test results is studied. A method of time transformation is proposed for the quantitative calibration of accelerated test results so that the applicability of the test results can be verified. The outcomes of the research presented herein include improved design criteria in terms of serviceability limit states and a rational basis for rehabilitation of corrosion-affected concrete structures.
