Abstract:

If not clearly stated in contract documents, an interpretation of formwork requirements may become an issue on a project. For example, if the specification calls for the largest practical size of plywood, a reasonable contractor interpretation would be 4 x 8 ft (1.2 x 2.4 m) size because 5 x 10 ft (1.5 x 3.0 m) is often special order where delivery can delay the project; however, the architect may think otherwise.

Abstract:

During construction, the load on the slabs can be up to 2 to 3 times their self-weight, which can damage serviceability and structural safety of the slabs with early-age concrete. In the present study, an existing model to predict the load on slabs during construction was modified to account for the use of regular supports and temporary supports in the shoring system, considering construction step where temporary supports are removed. Additionally, the effective supporting area of the shore was introduced to account for the uneven distribution of shores, thereby improving the prediction of construction loads on slabs. To verify the accuracy of the modified model, loads on shores were measured at a wall-type residential building under construction in South Korea. For 2 stories, the loads on shores were measured and the measurement lasted for 45 days. The comparison between predicted and measured slab construction loads showed that the predicted construction load agreed with the measured construction load.

Abstract:

The complex shape of the new Ocean Pavilion of the Seattle Aquarium has very few straight lines or flat surfaces. Turner Construction Company pushed the boundaries of virtual design and construction to achieve the pavilion’s various curving surfaces. The design team’s building information model was imported into SketchUp to design the project’s custom formwork.

Abstract:

The development of low carbon footprint and high initial compressive strength binders for the precast industry is presented. Binders with a substitution of up to 75% of a normal Portland cement (CEM I) with a mixture of metakaolin and two different limestone additions were developed on mortars. Water/binder ratio reduction (down to 0.25) and thermal treatment (up to 50°C) have been applied to improve initial compressive strength (> 14 MPa at 8 hours). Pozzolanic reaction improved 28 days compressive strength (> 50 MPa). The most technically and environmentally performant binders have been applied to concrete. Concretes with low clinker contents have been produced to achieve the C25/C30 and C40/50 strength classes. Durability performances corresponding to XC4 were assessed via a performance approach (FD P 18-480). A wall with integrated formwork has been industrially manufactured which allowed a carbon footprint reduction of around 30% over its whole life cycle.

Abstract:

With graceful curves and sleek lines, Una Residences is a new addition to the Miami, FL, USA, skyline. To establish an efficient and effective forming process, the concrete contractor turned to engineering support from Doka. Formwork systems from Doka were selected for construction of the foundation perimeter’s single-sided walls and building’s core walls.
