Abstract:
Concrete properties required for gamma ray absorption and neutron attenua-tion are outlined. "Fixed" water content and its role in slowing down faet neutrons are explained. Grouts and mortars, heavy aggregate properties, and use of boron are also covered. Placement methods evaluated include: con-ventional, pumping, prepacking, and puddling. Formwork problems including dimensional tolerances are outlined, and shields made of high-density concrete block are described. Tabulated data cover costs of materials as well as finished shielding structures.
