Abstract:
This paper describes experimental and analytical models developed at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) to evaluate the seismic response of cast-in-steel-shell (CISS) piles. Two CISS pile test units with different connection types to the pile cap were tested under varying axial and lateral loads. Test results showed that the embedment length of the steel shells into the pile cap, axial load variations, and the connection type influenced the lateral response of CISS piles. Observations recorded during testing were correlated with analytical predictions to characterize the load deformation response, predict damage levels and establish performance limit states for CISS piles under seismic loading.
