Abstract:
The crack patterns in deteriorated concrete have been evaluated. Using classical elasticity theories, it is possible to predict the eigenstresses from the deteriorational mechanisms and, combining these with fracture mechanics, form a prediction of the crack patterns. The predicted patterns have been confirmed by the actual patterns found by petrographical analysis for the relevant deteriorational mechanisms. The classic mechanical predictions, combined with knowledge of the constituent materials and petrographic analysis of thin sections, lead to an improved diagnostic of the concrete.
