Abstract:
The term sustainability, as often used today, usually invokes images of the greenness, or minimization of the environmental impact, of a given technology. I believe that any discussion of the sustainability of the concrete industry must involve concerns much broader than those of how green we may or may not be. There are two sources of change driving the concrete industry today: those from within our society, and those from within the industry itself some of which result directly from societal developments. Certainly, our industry will not disappear, but the way in which concrete is designed, specified, produced, delivered, placed, finished, and recycled will be different in the not too distant future.
