Abstract:
Many midrise buildings with waffle flat plates on concrete columns were severely damaged in the Sept. 19, 1985, Mexico City earthquake. The characteristics of these buildings and the prevailing modes of failures are briefly described. The performance of three specific buildings is evaluated and compared with what could be predicted from present design procedures.
