Abstract:
The Corps of Engineers' initial interest in roller-compacted concrete (RCC) was for use in mass concrete construction. Recently, however, the Corps has also begun using RCC for construction of heavy-duty pavements for low-speed traffic. There pavements must be able to withstand fuels, oils, deicing solutions, washwater, and other chemicals from routine maintenance of military equipment. The U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station is currently conducting research into RCC pavement mixture proportioning, thickness, design, construction, quality assurance testing, and frost resistance. The results of this research will be used to develop guidance to assist Corps field offices in the design and construction of RCC pavements.
