Abstract:
This article, the second of two on improving column confinement, provides an extended discussion of detailing requirements, proposes new confined provisions suitable for use in the ACI 318 Building Code, and evaluates these provisions. The proposed provisions are evaluated using a database of data for columns tested under cyclic loading, and the provision’s performance is compared against the performance of provisions in current U.S., Canadian, and New Zealand building codes. Extensions of the provisions to wall boundary elements, gravity columns, and circular columns are provided.
