Abstract:
Two types of cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow precast concrete columns (HPCC1 and HPCC2) were developed to reduce the lifting weight of large precast concrete (PC) columns and to enhance the structural integrity of beam-column joints. To produce the hollow core section, prefabricated PC panels were used for HPCC1, and special transverse bars were used for HPCC2. Pouring wet concrete in the hollow core, the lateral pressure on the hollow PC column was measured. To evaluate the seismic resistance, cyclic loading tests were performed for the two HPCC specimens and a conventional reinforced concrete (RC) specimen. The test results showed that the initial stiffness and maximum strength of the proposed HPCC1 and HPCC2 were comparable to those of the conventional RC column, but the displacement ductility was lower. Although the energy dissipation of the HPCC specimens slightly decreased at the ultimate drift ratio, all the test specimens satisfied the energy dissipation requirement specified in ACI 374.1-05.
