Abstract:
Over 110,000 cubic yards of concrete were placed in a 6-month duration for JFK runway 13L-31R. The runway was widened from 150 feet to 200 feet to accommodate new larger aircraft and the slabs were 18 inches thick. Due to the extremely large volume of concrete placed for the project, this presentation will focus on the importance of mix design, specifically combining aggregates to minimize paste volume and potential shrinkage that can induce cracking while also maintaining a workable mix. The test section prior to commencing production, spacing of joints, timeliness of curing and cutting of joints will also be discussed. Specification requirements and performance test results will also be presented.
