Abstract:
Swiss structural engineer Alexandre Sarrasin (1895-1976) specialized in the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. His bridges ranged from reinforced and prestressed beam systems to arches. Even though these structures were designed based on purely economic principles, they show an exceptional understanding of structural systems, efficient use of reinforced concrete properties, and a pleasing aesthetic. In this overview of his life and work, some of his most significant structures are presented, with special focus on his bridges and dams. The concept of "gentle" rehabilitation of historical concrete structures that aims to preserve the structure’s cultural and economic value, as well as the original character, without compromising durability, safety, and functionality, is also discussed in relation to these structures.
