Abstract:
A set of proposed Aesthetics & Efficiency Guidelines are presented for use in the design of short- and moderate-span bridges. Three themes are presented as a framework within which engineers can address aesthetics at each step of the engineering design process. The proposed Guidelines are applied to two specific projects. The first project was in the final stages of design when suggestions based on the Guidelines were offered. The second project, under initial planning, was examined for different options attainable through adherence to the Guidelines. The resulting impact on aesthetics and efficiency of these projects is presented. The economic impact of proposed designs is discussed
