Abstract:
In most reinforced concrete structures, the structural engineer designs and specifies splices of the reinforcing bars. Often lap splices are undesirable, im-practicable, or they are not permitted. In those cases, mechanical or welded connections must be used to splice the reinforcing bars. This report’s objective is to provide engineers with basic information about mechanical connections and the types of proprietary splice devices currently available. Since these splice devices are proprietary, this information has not previously been presented in such an assembled and detailed format. Reasons for using mechanical connections are discussed as well as various engineering consideration that must be made when specifying mechanical connections. Both compression-only and full tension-compression splices are examined. Splice devices are described in terms of their configuration, procedure for splicing, clearance requirements, and other characteristics. Illustrations of the various splice devices are included.
