Abstract:
When excessive quantities of shear reinforcing and solid concrete blocks penetrate the insulation in a sandwich panel, significant quantities of heat escape through these shear connectors. In some cases, the U-value may be increased by as much as 230 percent when excessive shear reinforcing is used. A simple method of calculating the theoretical U-value of a sandwich panel to account for heat losses through the shear connectors is demonstrated. The U-values of several different panel designs are compared to indicate the thermal efficiency of those designs.
