Abstract:
An old professor of history in the school that I attended about a half century ago became famous for starting each lecture with this statement: "As old Romans have already known…" Contrary to this favorite pronouncement, knowledge about the mixing together of materials to build "durable" structures existed in ancient times before the advent of the Roman civilization.
