Description
This presentation discusses the evolution of durability provisions in ACI 318 Building Codes and predecessors from the early 1900’s to today and how that evolution will likely continue. Historic aspects of scientific discovery, incorporation of provisions in codes, and introduction of materials and systems to address freezing and thawing deterioration, corrosion of embedded metals, alkali-aggregate reaction, and sulfate attack are described. The lineage of ACI building codes and supporting guide documents, as well as an introduction on the progression of ideas through industry standards to jurisdictional requirements are presented. By attending, those with general technical interests in concrete history, durability, and code progress will gain perspective, and practitioners that evaluate and repair existing buildings will gain an understanding of the types of issues that may be more prevalent in older structures constructed before conditions were known or addressed in codes.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Identify key durability requirements associated with primary materials-related distress mechanisms in historic ACI building codes.
2. Describe the timelines for scientific discoveries and the incorporation of provisions, materials, and systems into ACI building codes to enhance concrete durability.
3. Examine how concrete materials-related conditions impact durability and deterioration in existing U.S. structures based on their age and the knowledge available at the time of construction.
4. Explore new and advancing provisions and trends for improving durability in concrete structures.
