Description
Nondestructive testing (NDT) plays an important role in the quality control/quality assurance of new structures and repairs and the condition assessment of existing structures. This webinar will present the theory and practical application of NDT methods for the evaluation of concrete structures, including methods to: measure thickness and other dimensions; characterize reinforcing bar placement parameters (location, cover, size); detect internal flaws (e.g. voids, cracks, etc.), identify material distresses; and assess in-place concrete strength. The NDT methods that will be discussed will include magnetic induction covermeters, Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), Impact-echo (IE) reflective ultrasonic testing, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV), Ultrasonic Shearwave Tomography, Cross-Hole Sonic Logging, Impulse-Response mobility testing (I-R), and others. The underlying principles of each method, applications for concrete structures, and inherent advantages and limitations of each methods will be described. Case studies in which various nondestructive evaluation methods were successfully utilized for concrete assessment during structural evaluation, structural repair, research, and litigation support projects will be presented. Field calibration and correlation processes that are necessary to obtain reliable NDE results and various ways in which NDE data can be effectively presented to clients and owners will also be discussed.
This is a recorded webinar from April 5, 2022.
Table of Contents
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the general theory and applications for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods commonly used to evaluate concrete structures.
2. Describe the process of evaluating and selecting appropriate test methods and equipment to meet project objectives for structural evaluation projects, including reinforcement mapping in concrete members, detection of construction-related flaws in concrete, assessment of material degradation, and in-place strength assessment.
3. Recall calibration and correlation processes necessary to obtain reliable results when applying NDE methods.
4. Summarize effective data presentation and reporting of NDE results.
