Description
This is a recorded webinar from June 26, 2024.
This webinar is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
This presentation will cover practical and efficient methods for using non-compliant aggregates in concrete mixtures while maintaining structural integrity. It explores five main objectives: (1) using chemical admixtures to immobilize or prevent deleterious chemical elements like chlorides and sulfates from causing further damage, (2) mitigating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) potential through innovative ASR testing procedures, (3) incorporating weak or porous aggregates by leveraging chemical admixtures to enhance the final product’s strength and durability, and (4) evaluating the potential of non-compliant sands with varying gradations in concrete mixtures. Given the dwindling global availability of compliant aggregates, this research seeks to translate academic findings into scalable industry solutions. The outcomes of the research study will offer standardized, practice-ready guidance for designing resilient concrete mixtures that effectively utilize non-compliant aggregates.
Table of Contents
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify important chemical admixtures and processes that can be used to incorporate chloride and/or sulfate contaminated aggregates into new concrete.
2. Differentiate the effectiveness of several ASR mitigation techniques using the results from multiple accelerated ASR test methods.
3. Compare the gradation effects of concrete mixtures made outside the bounds of ASTM C33.
4. Explain the impacts of using non-compliant aggregates as they relate to various codes and specifications.
