Description
This module is based on Chapters 12 and 15 from ACI 212.3R-16, “Report on Chemical Admixtures for Concrete.” Chapter 12 addresses the use of shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs) and shrinkage-compensating admixtures (SCAs) to help mitigate shrinkage cracking in concrete. This chapter also covers material composition of SRAs and SCAs and the applications for which they are ideally suited. Dosing suggestions and effects on fresh and hardened concrete are also addressed.
Chapter 15 covers the use of permeability-reducing admixtures (PRAs) to improve concrete durability through controlling moisture movement, reducing chloride ion permeability, and enhancing autogenous sealing. This chapter also describes the various material categories of PRAs, and discusses the selection of appropriate PRAs and proportioning recommendations for specific service conditions and applications.
Table of Contents
Learning objectives:
1. Describe how shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs) and shrinkage-compensating admixtures (SCAs) work to mitigate shrinkage cracking.
2. Explain the effects of SRAs and SCAs on fresh and hardened concrete.
3. Recognize ideal SRA dosing recommendations to obtain a desired level of shrinkage without adverse effects.
4. Describe how permeability-reducing admixtures (PRAs) can work to reduce water transmission through concrete.
5. Describe the exposure categories of PRAs and in which conditions they are best suited.
6. Identify test methods used to evaluate PRAs.
