Description

This module, based on Chapter 13 from ACI 212.3R-16, “Report on Chemical Admixtures for Concrete,” addresses the use of corrosion-inhibiting admixtures to help mitigate steel corrosion in concrete. This chapter provides information about how the three common types of corrosion-inhibiting admixtures – amine carboxylate, amine-ester organic emulsion, and calcium nitrite – work to slow the rate of corrosion of embedded steel. This chapter focuses on the evaluation of these three corrosion-inhibiting admixture types, their recommended applications for use, their recommended dosage rates, and their positive effect on improving durability and extending the life of hardened reinforced concrete that is exposed to chloride environments. This document was developed by ACI Committee 212 and approved by the ACI Technical Activities Committee.

Table of Contents

Learning objectives:

1. Explain the advantages of using corrosion-inhibiting admixtures in reinforced concrete exposed to corrosive chloride environments;

2. Describe how the three common corrosion-inhibiting admixtures work to reduce the rate of corrosion;

3. List some applications where each of the three corrosion-inhibiting admixtures would be better suited in different chloride exposure applications; and

4. Explain some other effects that each of these three corrosion-inhibiting admixtures have on freshly placed concrete and hardened concrete properties.
