Notes/Preview
The contents of this course include three recorded presentations from the ACI 2020 Spring Virtual Convention:
• Is My Concrete Defective? by Lawrence Homer Taber, Black & Veatch
• Who is Watching Out for the Cylinders? by Karthik Obla, NRMCA
• Concrete Strength Evaluation with ACI 562: An Engineer’s Perspective, by Dean Deschenes, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.
INSTRUCTIONS: Study the materials included in this module. Then, complete and pass the corresponding 10-question quiz with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate for 0.20 CEU (equivalent to 2.0 PDH). This online course is not approved for credit with the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB).
Continuing Education Credit: 0.20 CEU (2.0 PDH)

Access Period: 30 days
Description
Low compressive strength tests on projects are common in concrete construction and can be a challenge. In this course we will discuss the importance of initial curing conditions and how to properly cure concrete specimens, code requirements, proper evaluation of the issues, the impacts to durability, understanding code versus contractual resolutions, and troubleshooting what causes issues. Audience is engineers, architects, contractors, owners, materials and testing personnel.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify the ACI 301 specification requirements for low concrete compressive strength.
2. Explain effective means to perform initial concrete curing of concrete test specimens taken in construction site.
3. Describe strength evaluation steps to evaluate deteriorated concrete structures, including sampling plan for NDT testing and core testing to establish accurate estimate of in-place concrete strength.
4. Explain many durability concerns for concrete placements that can negatively effect in-place concrete strength and strategies to minimize durability concerns. NDT techniques to evaluate low compressive strength concrete.
