Description
There is tremendous effort that is spent in the design of a sustainable concrete mix design from material selection (including novel carbon-neutral materials) to proportioning. On paper, the CO2 savings can be considerable. However, in practice, a major hurdle for any concrete is ability for the material to be properly placed and consolidated. This course will focus on bringing awareness to the impact workability can have on sustainability, and also to highlight practices that can ensure paper CO2 savings can be translated to actual CO2 savings.

Learning objectives:
1. Analyze mixture proportioning choices including admixtures that can improve sustainability without sacrificing performance.
2. Discuss practical advancements, including additives and novel cement dispersants for sustainability in low-cement mixes.
3. Identify novel uses of additives to impart improved rheologies for different applications while replacing cement.
4. Recognize the importance of on-board monitoring and in mixer trucks as well as in-transit management of mix trucks for waste reduction and CO2 savings while maintaining confidence in the final concrete properties.
