Access Period: 30 days
Description
Reinforced concrete slabs are widely used floor systems that demonstrate complex behaviors and vulnerability to different failure modes at support walls and columns. In designing slabs, provisions for shear, shear reinforcement requirements, and moment transfer at the support is an area of continued research and advancement. Serviceability issues are also important to designers, especially with the advancement in materials used in concrete.
This course introduces the new ACI 421.3R-15, “Guide to Design of Reinforced Concrete Two-Way Slab Systems”, as well as code-compliant analysis methods in the design of two-way slab systems and guidelines to transmit floor loads from slabs to support columns. Background research by Dr. Gene Corley in developing code standards and current research on steel fiber reinforcement for impact load resistance will also be presented. This course will be of interest to practicing engineers, university professors, manufacturers, and students.

Table of Contents
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify how the new ACI 421.3R, “Guide to Design of Reinforced Concrete Two-Way Slab Systems,” helps design engineers to analyze conventional reinforced two-way concrete flat-slab and flat slab-to-column connection designs;
2. Examine historical research and current code provisions for two-way slab designs and slab-to-column punching shear-capacity designs;
3. Compare different design methods for two-way slabs and identify the appropriate method for different design circumstances; and
4. Compare results of impact load tests on conventionally reinforced concrete slabs with those on similar slabs containing added fiber reinforcement.
