Description

This is a recorded webinar series from November 1, 2016.

The response of concrete and other structures subjected to blast loading is very different from other dynamic loading events such as earthquake and gust wind loading due to the extreme high pressure and short duration of the application of loading. This topic will introduce you to the nature of blast loads and how the structural elements such as the beams, slabs and walls perceive the blast effects in the form of pressure and impulse. Various methods of analysis will be briefly introduced with a focus on Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) analysis that is quite frequently used. Advanced analysis techniques used will also be discussed during the presentation. Design criteria such as the Level of Protection (LOP) desired for the design will also be discussed. Finally, various resources available to the designer will be summarized so that an engineer can pursue this topic further on their own.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives

1) Describe the nature of blast loads on a building and how the effects of the shock wave is transmitted to the building.

2) Recognize how different concrete structural elements perceive these loads and how they are converted to loads that can be used for the analysis and design of structural elements.

3) Discuss the different analysis and design options available to the engineer starting from the basic Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) analysis to advanced Finite Element Analysis options.

4) Briefly explain some of the design criteria such as the Level of Protections and the conditions associated with different LOPs.

5) Summarize the openly available resources and references available in this subject.
