Description

This is a recorded webinar from February 6, 2018.

Over six percent of bridges in the United States are structurally deficient due to corrosion-related damage with a direct annual cost of over $8 billion and indirect costs estimated at 10 times this amount. A high percentage of this damage is due to corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete. This webinar describes the causes and process of corrosion of reinforcing steel; competing corrosion protection systems, including low-permeability concrete, protective membranes, protective coating on the reinforcement, suppression of the electrochemical reaction, and corrosion-resistant metals; research on different corrosion protection systems; and comparisons of the life expectancy and cost-effectiveness of the systems in new construction based on the performance of concrete bridge decks.
