240-0A - Calcined Clays (CCL)

Committee Mission: The subcommittee on calcined clays (CCL) seeks to provide a source of reliable information and reference for producers and professionals looking to incorporate calcined clays in their projects by developing and maintaining documentation related to the use of calcined clays in concrete. Calcined clays are manufactured natural pozzolans, currently seen as one of the main strategies to decarbonize the cement and concrete industry worldwide due to their high reactivity and widespread availability. Calcined clay production has already started in the US at an industrial level, and pilot trials of ready-mix concrete have been accomplished, most notably by AshGrove (MinRoad project) and National Cement in California. It is expected that the market share of calcined clays in North America will largely surpass that of conventional (uncalcined) natural pozzolans in the next 5-to-10 years. The deployment of this technology is also seen as an effective pathway to overcome the shortage in cement availability in several regions of the country.

Goals: The goal of the subcommittee is to develop and maintain a guide for use of calcined clays in concrete within ACI, serving as a tool for academia and industry to acquire basic knowledge on this emerging technology. The subcommittee will also organize regular technical sessions related to different aspects of research, use, and industrial deployment of calcined clays.
