ACI Illinois Chapter hosted the Fiber Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball at their certification training center in Elmhurst, IL on February 9, 2019. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville team with ACI Illinois Chapter President Joni Jones. The objective of the concrete competition is to demonstrate the benefits of fiber use in concrete, to facilitate interaction between industry professionals and student members, and to enable students to earn money towards competing at the ACI Competition held in Quebec City, QC, Canada on March 24, 2019. University teams in the competition included Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Valparaiso University and University of Illinois at Chicago. Industry participants were represented by Flood Testing, Elmhurst Chicago Stone, and Ozinga Chicago Ready-Mixed Concrete. University of Illinois at Chicago team with ACI Illinois Chapter President Joni Jones. Each team designed and fabricated a fiber-reinforced bowling ball. The team from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was awarded the first-place cash prize of $750. The industry winner will receive a custom-made concrete traveling trophy that will remain in their possession until next year’s competition. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is also the recipient of a $750 travel stipend from the ACI Competition Travel Stipend program. The ACI FRC Bowling Ball Competition will take place March 29, 2020 during The Concrete Convention & Exposition in Chicago/Rosemont, IL, USA.
