The Florida Concrete & Products Association (FC&PA) held its 6th Annual Concrete Bowling Ball Competition on Friday, March 1, 2019 at FC&PA Headquarters. The FC&PA Education Committee works in connection with the ACI Student Competition and ACI Committee - S801 Student Competitions to bring regional competitions to Florida. University students from across Florida, in addition to a team from Peru, entered fiber reinforced concrete bowling balls and posters detailing their design and casting process research to be judged in six various categories. The objective of the competition was to demonstrate the effect of fibers in reinforcing concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a concrete fiber-reinforced element, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis. The students gained hands-on experience about how to select materials to meet weight limits, strength and toughness of concrete, casting a round object, and how to achieve uniform consolidation to ensure a straight roll. Eleven university teams competed in the event including Florida International University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Miami, University of North Florida, and the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University won first place ($1,500) and the award for Most Team Spirit. The University of Miami won second place ($1,000) and the award for Most Artistic. University of North Florida took home the prize for third place ($750). “We had a tremendous turnout this year and I want to thank the many FC&PA Staff and Education Committee members for participating in welcoming students and judging,” remarked Gordon McLellan, FC&PA Education Committee Chairman. “Local ACI members were in attendance, and Page One consultants joined us for lunch. Our international competitors, while not placing, enjoyed the event and plan to attend next year as well.” Next year, FC&PA will send winners to the Spring 2020 FRC Bowling Ball Competition in Chicago/Rosemont, IL, USA.
