Strengthening of Concrete Structures Using FRP Systems was one of several sessions at the 16th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement of Concrete Structures. The symposium kicked off The ACI Concrete Convention in New Orleans, LA, USA, on Saturday, March 23, 2024. The two-day symposium attracted interest from researchers, practitioners, and manufacturers involved in the use of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) as reinforcement for concrete and masonry structures, including the use of FRP reinforcement in new construction and FRP for strengthening and rehabilitation of existing structures. Recent FRP code developments, emerging FRP systems with successful applications, durability benefits, and dozens of other topics surrounding the advancement of FRP systems in places such as the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Europe, China, and more were discussed. With a focus of raising awareness of FRP as reinforcement for concrete and masonry structures, several sponsors chose to participate in the event, including: International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC) NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials FYFE MST Rebar Missouri Center for Transportation Innovation (MCTI) Modjeski and Masters Inc. American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) The experimental, analytical, and numerical validations of using FRP composites were discussed, as well as insights needed for improving existing guidelines and developing design codes. Information was also provided on frontiers of FRP research with respect to emerging materials, systems, and applications for extreme events such as fire and earthquakes. Presentations also featured discussions on sustainability, novel applications, new technologies, and long-term field data that will result in greater acceptance and use of FRP composites technology by practitioners.
