Description
This is a recorded webinar series from September 18,19, 25, 26, 2023.
This webinar series covers the 2021 edition of ACI 562, “Assessment, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures - Code and Commentary. The Code was developed to provide design professionals a code for the assessment of the damage and deterioration, and the design of appropriate repair and rehabilitation strategies. ACI CODE-562-21 was specifically developed to work with the International Existing Building Code (IEBC) or to be adopted as a stand-alone code.
Discover the critical nexus between concrete repair and industry codes through our comprehensive course on Concrete Repair and Rehabilitation. Designed for engineers, construction professionals, and anyone involved in the maintenance and restoration of concrete structures, this course will provide you with a thorough understanding of the latest codes and best practices governing concrete repair.
As concrete structures age and encounter environmental stresses, deterioration can occur. This course goes beyond the surface, delving into the intricacies of concrete repair, with a focus on adhering to industry standards and codes. You will gain the expertise needed to assess, plan, and execute effective repair strategies while ensuring compliance with safety and quality requirements. Real-world case studies of existing concrete repair projects are presented in each part of the webinar.
Table of Contents
This course provides 8 hours of content divided into four 2-hour modules.
Learning Objectives:
1. Review the reasons why concrete cracks and recognize the main crack patterns in concrete.
2. Identify how to select the design basis code for repair.
3. Review the criteria for assessment, repair, and rehabilitation design of concrete structures.
4. Discuss the main non-destructive test methods; advantages and disadvantages.
5. Summarize how to perform a structural assessment.
6. Explain how to use ACI CODE-562-21 for repair of structures.
Part 1—Presented by Keith Kesner includes an introduction and Chapters 1 through 3.
Description:
The first part of this webinar lays the background for the need of a repair code. The attendee will gain insight into the purpose and significance of concrete repair codes, understand the role of ensuring structural integrity and safety. This part will present the history and past codes on repair, the requirements of preliminary assessment, and the main crack pattern in an existing concrete structure due to material properties, load, or environmental effects.
Learning Objectives:
1. Outline the history of repair in the concrete industry.
2. Explain why a repair code is needed.
3. Review and recognize the main concrete cracks.
4. State the importance and reason for preliminary assessment.
Part 2—Presented by Michael Bartlett reviews Chapters 4 through 6.
Description:
The second part of this webinar helps the engineer determine the design basis code for rehabilitating an existing concrete project. The attendee will learn the different load combinations and reduction factors that are in the Code. Advanced techniques for assessing the condition of existing concrete structures, including non-destructive testing, visual inspection, and material analysis are introduced.
Learning Objectives:
1. Determine the design basis code for your project.
2. Recognize the different load combinations in the code.
3. Learn that new load combinations are included for fire.
4. Determine what material properties to use for assessment.
5. Explain the different non-destructive test methods, advantages and disadvantages.
6. Evaluate obtained cores or coupons from the existing concrete structures.
7. Perform the assessment process.
Part 3—Presented by David Tepke covers Chapter 7.
Description:
The objective of the repair design process is presented. The attendee will explore a range of repair methods, from surface repairs to structural strengthening, and understand how to select the appropriate approach based on the severity of damage and code requirements. The factors that affect bond of new material to the existing concrete structure are explored. Real-world case studies of concrete repair projects, examining both successful and challenging scenarios will deepen the attendees understanding of practical applications.
Learning Objectives:
1. Consider the repair process.
2. Describe how to maintain a continuous load path.
3. Distinguish between different bond strengths for different applications.
4. Recognize the use of fiber-reinforced polymers in strengthening existing concrete structures.
Part 4—Presented by Kyle Stanish discusses Chapters 8 through 10.
Description:
In this part of the webinar, the attendee will delve into considerations for extending the service life of repaired concrete structures, including strategies to mitigate future deterioration and enhance durability. The attendee will learn how to implement robust quality control and assurance process throughout the repair lifecycle, ensuring that repair meet code specifications and industry standards.
Learning Objectives:
1. State the importance of durability.
2. Recognize the importance of establishing a maintenance program.
3. Review of shoring design by licensed design professional (LDP).
4. Describe how to apply temporary loading conditions.
5. Review the importance of including the inspection program in contract documents.
