Thirty-five years ago, ACI’s first certification program was launched–the Concrete Field Testing Technician program. Since that time, more than 550,000 craftsmen, technicians, inspectors, and other concrete professionals have pursued ACI Certifications, and a large and growing list of specifiers and owners are requiring the concrete industry’s leading certification credentials. Adhesive Anchor Installation Testing in Progress As of June, 2018, ACI has more than 80,000 active Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade I Certifications, and more than 123,000 active ACI Certifications, leading the concrete industry forward through offering quality certification programs. This year, ACI introduced the Self-Consolidating Concrete Testing Technician program, which tests candidates’ ability to correctly perform five ASTM test methods developed specifically for self-consolidating concrete. ACI’s recently-released Decorative Concrete Flatwork certification program measures candidates’ knowledge about proper procedures related to placing, finishing, curing, and protecting decorative concrete flatwork. Self-Consolidating Concrete Testing in progress ACI-certified personnel were in action at the Mega Slab placement at the General Motors Arlington Assembly Plant, Arlington, TX, January 13-15, 2018. At 256,000 ft 2 (23,780 m2) and 8 in. (203 mm) thick, the slab placement was a massive endeavor. According to the GM project specifications, all lead foremen were required to be ACI-certified. Additionally, the Barton Malow team onsite, one of several teams, had 95% of their crew ACI-certified. For the 131 workers and the project leaders, the Mega Slab project was truly a unique event. Nearing the end of the project, one worker exclaimed that he was ready for another enormous placem ent: “Man, I don’t wanna stop. Let’s do 500,000 ft2 next time.” Read the full Concrete International article. The first amendment states that only ACI-certified Concrete Field Testing Technicians can sample and test fresh concrete in the field. The second amendment requires ACI Strength Testing Technician certification for individuals breaking cylinders in the lab. In March 2018, ACI Certification staff traveled to the U.K. for further development of a British Standards/European Norms-based ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician program in cooperation with the Institute for Concrete Technology (ICT). A dozen key participants from the concrete industry in the U.K. and Ireland participated in a 2-day workshop focused on developing the content of this new program. Working with ICT, ACI staff will return to the U.K. in late September for the official orientation and certification of the program facilitators. Following this event, the program will be available through ICT in the U.K. and Ireland. ACI also met with the Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC)–a group comprised of Indian construction companies and the Indian government, charged with the responsibility of improving construction in India. The purpose of the meeting was to qualify and train future program administrators to deliver a custom ACI certification program for Concrete Field Testing Technicians based on Indian standards. The meeting took place at the ACI Illinois Chapter training and certification center in Chicago, February 19-22, 2018. By continuing to specify ACI certification, the industry is confirming the demand for quality certification programs and acknowledging the importance of working with skilled individuals. ACI will continue to provide leadership to ensure its customers are equipped to sustainably address the needs of a changing world.
