Contractors’ Day Highlights

General contractors, project managers, and concrete industry professionals gathered for sessions, a lunch presentation, and an evening networking event, as part of Contractors’ Day at The Concrete Convention and Exposition in Anaheim, CA.

A special Contractors’ Day session – Mega Projects-Challenging the Southern California Concrete Industry included presentations of high-profile projects that are changing the Southern California Concrete Industry. The session included discussion of concrete mixes, evaluating demands for mass concrete, challenges related to materials properties to meet structural demands based on seismic requirements, and challenges with logistics and field operations associated with major projects.

SoCal Modernism - Preserving Concrete Modernist Structures highlighted the modernist concrete structures throughout Southern California as well as throughout the country, including the unique technical challenges associated with preservation, repair, and restoration of these structures. Attendees learned about the architectural and construction history of these structures and various repair approaches and challenges.

Evaluating construction information with respect to constructability, and the application of ACI documents, were the themes for a four-part session honoring Dr. Ward R. Malisch, ACI Honorary Member. The Concrete Construction Symposium presented important information about the latest knowledge in concrete construction and materials, evaluating the appropriate us of specification information, and troubleshooting projects to resolve issues.

Attendees also enjoyed a special lunch presentation focusing on unique applications of concrete in new construction as part of the ongoing expansion of the Disney theme parks. Featured speaker Kent Estes spoke about the challenges in design, engineering, and construction.

A two-part session - Creep and Shrinkage of Concrete - Honoring Professor Adam Neville – featured experts sharing their knowledge on the subject. The objective of the session was to identify the importance of concrete creep and shrinkage in the design and construction of tall buildings and understand how they are considered in actual tall building projects. Presenters explained the role of shrinkage and tensile creep in early-age cracking in a variety of structural situations and design guidance on control of early-age cracking.

To round off the day, Contractors’ Day attendees joined other concrete professionals at the Concrete Mixer for an evening networking, entertainment, and great food.
