Thirteen undergraduate teams participated in the ACI Eco Concrete Competition that was held in conjunction with the ACI Virtual Concrete Convention. The teams were interviewed the week prior to the convention and projects were presented via Zoom on October 17, 2021.
The objective of the Eco Concrete Competition is to promote the idea of environmental performance in concrete mix designs. The event was sponsored by ACI Committee 130-G Education and ACI S801 Student Competitions.
The teams were asked to develop an innovative concrete mixture which will have the lowest possible environmental impacts while maintaining or improving the durability performance. To achieve this goal, teams were encouraged to seek out and use local resources of eco-friendly materials such as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). After designing their concrete mixture, teams performed a simplified life-cycle assessment (LCA) and presented their results in a written report and recorded presentation.
The first, second, and third-place winners of the competition will receive cash prizes of $750, $500, and $250 USD respectively.
