Who could have dreamed just 10 years ago that the Web would turn into one of the most important aspects of modern society? It has affected our everyday life to the extent that we have changed our way of doing many things to take advantage of the enormous possibilities. The impact on education, formal and continuing, has not been overlooked by ACI. The ACI Board of Direction has been working with ACI staff on novel ways to improve e-learning for our members and the concrete industry at large. All ACI members can be proud of the results so far. For example, attendees at the 2008 World of Concrete voted the ACI Concrete Knowledge Center as one of the "Most Innovative Products" of the year! If you have used the Knowledge Center at www.concrete.org/tkc/knowledge_center.htm, you will not be surprised by this. The Knowledge Center offers a hands-on—and what I call an "eyes-on"— experience in understanding ACI 318 because all the resources of electronic referencing are used there. Clicking on a 318 clause takes the user to references, explanations, comments, and even a Q&A forum. I invite all ACI members to take this tour. But the Knowledge Center covers much more than ACI 318. It touches all areas of concrete with the same trademark of excellence that has distinguished ACI for 104 years. The New Year brings ACI members another novel product. It just got easier to receive concrete-related training! ACI’s newest educational product, ACI eLearning, will formally launch on January 15, 2009. This eLearning product, the result of joint venture efforts between ACI and Elsevier, Inc., will make online education on concrete topics available worldwide, 24/7, to both ACI members and nonmembers. Initial content offerings will focus on ACI certification training for concrete field testing and strength testing technicians. There will be six training modules for field testing technicians and four modules for strength testing technicians. Each module covers one or more of the ASTM standard test methods included in the ACI certification programs and includes a copy of the standard relating to each test method. Interactive questions throughout the modules give the user immediate feedback concerning how well the material being covered is understood by the user. Extensive use of graphics and videos reinforce the content presented in the ASTM standards. Additionally, at the end of each module, a 10-question assessment quiz gives the user an opportunity to practice taking an exam on the covered content. Individuals seeking certification from ACI still must take and pass the written and performance examinations administered through an ACI-approved Local Sponsoring Group. To find a group near you, go to www.concrete.org, click on the "Certification" tab near the top of the page, and select "Find Your Local Sponsoring Group" from the pull-down menu. In addition to the certification training topics, ACI will be offering additional training throughout 2009 on a variety of technical topics pertaining to concrete. We expect to be able to offer courses on materials, design, and construction. Some topics may include Web-based versions of popular ACI educational seminars including “Anchorage to Concrete," "Design of Concrete Slabs on Ground," and "Concrete Floor and Slab Construction." New topics are also being considered. Courses will generally consist of six to seven training modules and each module will include appropriate ACI resource documents. Access to course material will be valid for 1 year from date of purchase. Each 1-hour module will be individually priced, with ACI member and volume discounts available when all modules in a given course are purchased. Participants who successfully take and pass the assessment quiz at the end of each training module will be granted Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from ACI. The amount of credit earned will depend on the amount of time required to complete the module. It is expected that most modules will be 1-hour in duration, and that 0.1 CEU (equivalent to 1 PDH) will be granted. More good, new things are coming and will be announced via the Web, of course. I want to wish all ACI members a great 2009! Luis E. García American Concrete Institute luis.garcia@concrete.org Back to Memo List
