Since the debut of the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) free Student E-Membership program in Sept. 2006, the organization has seen the number of its student members soar from 896 to over 5,000. ACI currently offers numerous opportunities for its student members. Student members have access to the same information as traditional members, such as ACI’s award-winning Concrete Knowledge Center, Concrete International, the Career Center, and ACI’s industry-leading Journals. Additionally, student members can also join an ACI committee, submit papers for possible publication, and receive discounts on ACI publications and events. This year, ACI is accepting applications for eight Fellowships and six Scholarships valued at $77,000 to be awarded to ACI student members during ACI’s Spring 2009 Convention in San Antonio, Texas, March 15-19. “The phenomenal growth of the ACI’s student membership program is a testament to the valuable information that the Institute provides to students across the globe. These 5,000 student members are the concrete industry leaders of tomorrow,” said Andrea Schokker, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota Duluth, and Chair, ACI Advisory Committee for Young Members. “Plus, the fact that Student E-Membership is free, there is really no reason why students interested in concrete shouldn’t join ACI.” And not just American students are taking advantage of ACI’s student membership. Over half of the 5,000 student members are from outside the U.S. “When you love concrete, it is important to be a member of the greatest concrete association in the world,” said Yaser Mirzaei, PhD candidate studying structural concrete at Ecole Polytechnique Fe´de´rale de Lausanne in Palaiseau, France.
