The American Concrete Institute hosted the first ACI 318-14: Reorganized for Design seminar on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in Detroit from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The seminars are designed to help ACI members, code-users, and other industry professionals get acquainted with the completely reorganized ACI 318-14 “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete.” This edition represents the first major change in code organization in more than 40 years, and the seminars give an in-depth look at the new code organization and various technical changes. Despite frigid, record-breaking cold temperatures, presenters James Wight and Michael Tholen spoke to a full house. Approximately 70 people braved the weather to pack the seminar room. Wight, FACI and FASCE, is the F.E. Richart, Jr. Collegiate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan and a member of ACI’s committee 318 on Structural Concrete Building Code. He was instrumental in the reorganization of ACI 318-14. Tholen, PhD, PE, is managing director of professional development at ACI with a civil and architectural engineering background. Attendees received a complimentary copy of ACI 318-14 and a printed copy of the presentation at the beginning of the day to follow along with the presenters. The seminar (and all future seminars) concentrated on provisions for cast-in-place, nonprestressed concrete member design. The philosophy behind the new organizational structure was demonstrated through a thorough review of the Code’s outline and provisions in the major chapters to give attendees insight into the background behind the new organizational structure and how the new organization makes it easier to find needed requirements All major technical changes and new provisions were highlighted to keep Code users up-to-date with the latest requirements. For an opportunity to register, find a seminar near you. Dozens of additional seminar locations will be added throughout 2015. Webinars will be available soon, too.
