As part of ACI’s strategy of strengthening the two-way relationship between the Institute and its chapters, ACI recently co-sponsored Future Concrete 2015 – an international conference organized by Advanced Construction Technology Services (ACTS) in Lebanon, the ACI Lebanon Chapter, the Order of Engineers and Architects of Beirut, federation international de beton, and the American Society for Testing and Materials. The conference provided the construction community with the latest developments and innovative ideas and promote the use of the newest and best practices for the benefit of sustainable construction. A featured event of the conference was the ‘Art of Concrete’ student competition. The ACI Lebanon chapter challenged students to make art out of concrete. The competition attracted 17 groups from seven Lebanon-based universities, showcasing the artistic nature of concrete, and challenged the students to create their original works of art and display concrete’s many varieties of form, function, and beauty. Entries received came in in the form of sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, and scale models. “This year’s competition exceeded our expectations,” said Khaled Awad, Chairman of ACTS, and current ACI vice president. “Their original works of art just show how remarkable their passion is to apply ingenuity and find creative solutions to rise to the challenge.” The winning team of Sara Attar and Nisrine Attar from Beirut Arab University, Debbieh, got the highest scores and received the top prize of a trip to Denver, Colorado, USA to attend the ACI Fall Convention this November. Their entry was a human scale model that exemplified the importance of concrete in our life and glorified the remarkable properties of concrete. The American Concrete Institute has 99 chapters, 65 student chapters, and nearly 20,000 members spanning over 120 countries, and aims to strengthen relationships between ACI and its chapter members as part of its strategic plan.
