On Sunday, November 8, 2015, leaders from the American Concrete Institute and Fédération Internationale du Béton (fib) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to formalize their relationship. While the two organizations and their members have worked together for years, this agreement memorializes both Institutes’ desires to collaboratively develop and disseminate technical information on concrete and concrete structures. Present for the signing were Harald S. Müller, President, fib; Sharon Wood, President, ACI; William E. Rushing, Past President, ACI; and Ronald G. Burg, Executive Vice President, ACI. “Members of the American Concrete Institute and Fédération Internationale du Béton include thousands of the brightest minds from across the globe who share a common passion for concrete materials, design, and constriction,” stated Burg. “By formalizing the relationship between our organizations, we accelerate the development and dissemination of the global knowledge needed to use concrete effectively to meet the demands of a changing world.” Members of the two organizations have been working together for years -- serving on each others’ committees, participating together in global events, and sharing research and innovation amongst members. Most recently, the two organizations jointly hosted a conference in Montreal, Quebec, on the design and structural applications of fiber-reinforced concrete in beams, elevated floors, tunnel linings, slabs, pavements, precast elements, bridges and other applications, and are planning to jointly publish a symposium publication on the proceedings -- this joint conference and other potential global collaborations were highlighted in Bill Rushing’s September 2014 President’s Memo. Johan L. Silfwerbrand, Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden; and Member of both ACI and fib, recently shared his opinion for potential collaboration on code-related efforts between the two organizations – read more in his November 2015 Guest Memo.
