ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Award Winner The ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards dominated a record-breaking Concrete Convention and Exposition. Over 2,000 attendees and guests gathered in Denver, CO, USA, for the ACI Concrete Convention, November 8-12, 2015, joining colleagues for sessions, committee meetings, a student competition, personal awards, networking and social events, and the highlight of the convention—the ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards On the evening of Monday, November 9, 2015, the highest “Excellence” award was presented to MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations located in Marseille, France. The project was submitted by the ACI Paris Chapter. Nine additional global projects were recognized during the packed Gala event at The Concrete Convention and Exposition, in Denver, CO, USA. MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations The awards were created to honor the visions of the most creative projects in the concrete industry, while providing a platform to recognize concrete innovation, technology, and excellence across the globe. “I congratulate all the project teams and thank them for providing us this opportunity to showcase projects that are at the forefront of innovation and technology within the concrete industry,” said ACI President Sharon L. Wood. “I also would like to acknowledge all of the entrants – each project is worthy of recognition.” A record number of students participated in the Pervious Concrete Student Competition. Teams were challenged to apply sustainability concepts and to use their knowledge of concrete mixture design by producing pervious concrete that balanced permeability and splitting tensile strength. Teams were additionally challenged to develop a mixture design that demonstrated cementitious efficiency; that is, maintaining the overall performance of the mixture with the lowest amount of cementitious material. Students at the Pervious Concrete Student Competition Contractors' Day, featuring sessions, a lunch presentation, and an evening networking event is always a hit with general contractors, project managers, and concrete industry professionals, at every Concrete Convention and Exposition. Experts shared their knowledge with attendees as part of a well-attended Contractors’ Day Session titled “Constructability.” Attendees also enjoyed a lunch presentation by Jeff Evans, World Class Adventurer and Mountaineering Guide, titled “Mountain Vision: Lessons Beyond the Summit.” Read more. ACI's eighth annual Concrete Sustainability Forum was held on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at the ACI Convention in Denver, CO, USA. During the Forum, global experts provided an update on new technologies, sustainability assessment systems, and sustainable design taking place in countries around the world. Read more. While the two organizations and their members have worked together for years, this agreement memorializes both Institutes’ desires to collaboratively develop and disseminate technical information on concrete and concrete structures.
